BitPay / Copay Recovery — Frequently Asked Questions
Which files do you actually need?
Ideally the exported backup JSON. If unavailable, send the full app data directory (mobile backup or desktop profile). We’ll locate the encrypted key store inside.
Do you need my seed phrase?
No. We only need encrypted wallet data/backups and your password hints. Never share your seed phrase.
Can you recover multisig wallets?
Often, yes—provided we can reconstruct enough keys to meet the quorum. We’ll use watch-only data and your backups to identify the correct cosigners/derivations.
Is recovery guaranteed?
No. Success depends on password complexity, hint quality, and multisig quorum. We start with a free offline assessment and then provide realistic next steps.

- If you have watch-only data (xpubs/addresses), include it—this helps us confirm correct candidates.
- If multiple backups exist, send them all; we’ll identify the most useful set.

What We Need
- Preferred: a BitPay/Copay wallet backup JSON (exported from the app).
- Or the app data directory from your device/computer (see paths below).
- Password hints for the wallet encryption (see guide below).
- (Optional) Known addresses/xpubs and whether the wallet is multisig (e.g., 2-of-3).
We do not need your seed phrase for assessment. Never share it.
Important Notes
- BitPay/Copay stores keys in an encrypted JSON backup and within the app’s data storage.
- For multisig, recovery requires enough keys to meet the quorum (e.g., 2 of 3). We can still help identify which cosigners/derivations you need.
- Close the app (or quit the desktop app) before copying data to avoid corruption.
- If unsure, send the entire app data directory; we’ll locate the right files.
